This document will describe the process of getting started with Guichan. You should keep in mind though that to use Guichan you ought to be a good C++ programmer with good understanding about the language C++, otherwise you are doomed to fail, this cannot be stretched enough.

To getting started in Windows you need to either have a MinGW installation (like Dev-C++) or Microsoft Visial Studio 8 installed (binaries for lesser versions aren't supported since Guichan 0.6.0, but of course you can always compile binaries yourself for your MSVC version). As Guichan is plain C++ using Guichan with other IDEs or compiler shouldn't be a problem, however that is out of the scope for this document.

MinGW and Dev-C++

To start you need to install Guichan (and libraries Guichan depend on, consult the library in question's documentation for an installation guide on library dependency installation). For MinGW you need to download the MinGW distribution of Guichan. To install Guichan simply copy the content of the headers directory to the header directory of the MinGW installation and the libraries to the library directory of the MinGW installation.

To set up a project the only thing you need to think about is linking with the Guichan libraries. It's done by passing all libraries you should link to to the linker's option (in Dev-C++ enter Project Options->Parameters->Linker).

To be able to execute an application dependent on Guichan the Guichan DLLs must be placed in the path of the application. The simplest way of doing that is to copy the DLLs (the needed DLLs) from the MinGW distribution to the directory of the application.

Secondly you need to enlable Use run-time library: Multithreaded DLL which is found under Your Project Properties->Configuration Properties->Code Generation.
